The world’s largest active volcano has erupted for the first time in 40 years, spewing hot lava and ash.

Rivers of molten rock could be seen high on Mauna Loa in Hawaii, venting clouds of steam and smoke atop the Big Island and sparking warnings that this could change quickly.

Pressure has been building on Mauna Loa for years, according to the United States Geological Survey, which said the eruption could be seen from 45 miles away.
