Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhals announced on Monday that Kyiv has fulfilled all the recommendations of the European Union (EU) in order to start negotiations on joining the bloc.

Ukraine has appointed a new head of the State Anti-Corruption Bureau, thus completing the reforms required by the EU, Shmihals announced.

“Ukraine has fulfilled all seven EU recommendations. This shows our determination to start accession negotiations this year,” the Prime Minister announced on Twitter.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has said that Ukraine deserves to start negotiations with Brussels about joining the EU this year.

40-year-old Semens Krivonos, who previously headed the ministry responsible for urban planning, has been appointed head of the state anti-corruption office.

Brussels granted Kyiv official candidate status last June, four months after Russia re-invaded Ukraine.

But Brussels said that Kyiv must implement seven reforms, including strengthening the fight against corruption and limiting the influence of oligarchs.

The accession process can take several years and the final say will belong to the governments of the EU member states.

Several EU member states are skeptical that Kyiv will be able to recover from Moscow’s invasion and implement the necessary democratic and anti-corruption reforms to be able to apply for membership in the bloc in the near future.
