The activity of our diurnal star changes in a cycle that lasts about 11 years. It grows early in the cycle, peaking after a few years. So the solar radiation emission is the highest, there are many solar flares and numerous spots appear on the photosphere. Thereafter, the activity of the Sun gradually decreases to a minimum and the cycle repeats.

NASA has released a photo of the great solar flare

The current 25th solar cycle runs from December 2019. The activity of the Sun has grown steadily since then. Researchers estimate that the maximum will occur only in mid-2025but we can already see more and more solar flares.

One of the biggest flares of recent times, researchers at NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory have recorded 16 April fr. (in Poland it was already April 17). As described by NASA, it was an X-class burst (designated X-1), which is one of the most powerful flares on a five-point scale.

NASA collected several photos of the glow in a short video. The sudden release of energy is clearly visible in the upper part of the frame on the left.

As reported by Space.com website, the glow lasted 34 minutes and came from regions 2994 and 2993. After a few minutes, the sun ejected a huge cloud of plasma. The so-called can cause a coronal mass ejection in the event of an impact with the Earth storms the appearance of auroras in lower latitudes), disrupt radio communications and even damage artificial satellites.

Researchers expect larger solar flares from these regions of our star.
