FIG: Russians and Belarusians are still not allowed to return to gymnastics
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has extended the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from events under its auspices. The Executive Committee of the FIG decided at its meeting in Lausanne to maintain the validity of its previous decision. Insidethegames.biz reports that the justification states that “unfortunately, the conflict in Ukraine, which began more than a year ago, is still ongoing.” The FIG stated: “Given the exceptional circumstances related to the conflict, Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials, including judges, may not participate in FIG competitions until further notice.” Two days after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, on February 26 of last year, the world federation announced that Russian and Belarusian gymnasts could only compete in neutral status, and then on March 4, it banned athletes from the two countries from participating in the events under its auspices.
