Anders Aukland, 49, refuses to resign from training.

Inspired by Nils van der Poel, he has now entered his toughest training period ever.

– People say I’m crazy … and I agree, says the Norwegian ski profile.

Anders Aukland reaped his greatest success on the ski slopes in the early 2000s when he took home three World Cup medals and an Olympic gold in the relay.

He will turn 50 this fall and has not yet retired.

The Norwegian is planning to do one last season on the long-distance tour and now intends to enter his toughest training period ever.

Where does the inspiration come from?

Double the amount

Aukland read van der Poel’s much-described training poster in which the skating star reveals that he has cycled six to seven hours a day for several months.

Now Aukland will do something similar.

– I train five hours a day, five days a week. There will be a lot of mass training this summer, then I’ll switch places and train hard in the fall, he says NRK.

– I will double the number of training hours compared to how I have been in the last four or five years. Then I did harder training and less quantity, he continues.

The worried lady

Aukland himself sees no problems with his hard training, but the family – especially his wife Gina Korneliussen – are worried about his heart.

– What he’s doing is extreme, but he feels his body at its best, so I can only trust him, he says.

– Many people probably say this is madness … and I am inclined to agree. But it’s funny, says Aukland himself.
