CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (RockedBuzz through Reuters) -A Mexican photojournalist was killed in Ciudad Juarez in the early hours of Thursday whereas working as a taxi driver, authorities and his employer stated.
Ismael Villagomez, a photographer for the El Heraldo de Juarez newspaper, was shot dead in his automobile in the notoriously violent border metropolis round 1:30 a.m., based on native authorities.
Mexico is without doubt one of the world’s most harmful peacetime nations for journalists, though investigators stated they have been unable to instantly decide whether or not the killing was associated to his career.
“Once he finished his work in El Heraldo, he worked through the (ride-hailing) platform inDrive,” native prosecutor Carlos Manuel Salas advised reporters. “He usually labored from the afternoon till 2.3 in the morning”
InDrive stated it was complying with authorities’ requests as a part of the investigation and that three suspects had been arrested.
In Mexico, many journalists work exterior the career to pay the payments.
Investigators should not ruling out the likelihood that Villagomez was killed due to his work as a journalist, Salas stated.
“A journalist is a journalist 24 hours a day, even if he wasn’t working as something else in the meantime,” Salas stated, including that Villagomez’s cellphone was lacking on the scene.
According to the advocacy group Article 19, there was a documented assault towards the press each 13 hours in Mexico in 2022.
“We are worried, sad, angry,” stated Jose Ramon Ortiz, editor of the newspaper the place Villagomez labored. “We don’t need this to occur because it occurred with the deaths of different journalists. We need it to be clear whether or not the explanation was journalistic or associated to one thing else.”
