Learning the Latvian language causes problems for some people living in Latvia, but it turns out that foreigners who do not live in Latvia or in a Latvian environment can learn it, reports Latvijas Televīzija (LTV).
James Kröger is a German lawyer and works at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. He learned Latvian because his wife is Latvian, although they both speak English at home.
“I think that the Latvian language is one of the most difficult languages that I have come across,” says James.
The story of Emanuel François is similar – he also married a Latvian woman and learned the language to communicate with his wife’s family in Liepāja.
Latvian language came easier to Valter, because both parents speak it at home, living in Luxembourg. In addition, Latvian language and literature lessons are held four times a week at the European school.
