The criminal case in which former Riga City Council “Saskaņa” deputy Igors Kuzmuks is accused of supporting the financing of the armed conflict in Ukraine is planned to be heard by the Riga City Court in the suburb of Latgale on September 12 at 11 a.m.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the accused republished on his “Telegram” channel a call to finance and provide with property the Russian armed forces, whose activities are directed against the territorial integrity and political independence of Ukraine.
Kuzmuk’s name came up last summer, when the Department of Education, Culture and Sports of the Riga City Council evaluated the actions of the sports coach of the Riga Gymnastics School, former Riga City Council member from “Saskaņa” Kuzmuk, in connection with activities glorifying Russia. As LETA observed at the time, Kuzmuk published posts glorifying Russia on his Facebook account.
The department states that the director of the Gymnastics School held discussions with Kuzmuk, asking him to explain the motives of his actions, legal and ethical aspects, as well as to evaluate his publications and comments on social networks. At the same time, the school director allegedly warned Kuzmuk that if actions were taken that would adversely affect the school’s reputation, it would be decided to terminate the employment relationship.
Kuzmuk ran again in the 2020 Riga City Council elections, but did not get into the municipality.
