Continuing to provide support to the people of Ukraine, who, fleeing the war caused by Russia in Ukraine, have currently found their refuge and home in Liepāja, the municipality, in cooperation with the support of the Defense Cooperation Office of the US Embassy and the “City for People” society, has made Ukrainian families happy by donating household appliances, while Ukrainian children and for young people – bicycles.
A total of 11 household appliances – washing machines and refrigerators – were delivered by Liepāja municipality to eight municipal apartments where families from Ukraine live. They are mostly families where the mother takes care of the children alone, and families where seniors and persons with disabilities live. The Defense Cooperation Office of the US Embassy donated 24 washing machines and 24 refrigerators to Latvia, from which Liepāja and Southern Kurzeme districts received 23 household appliances.
Previously, with the support of the US Defense Cooperation Office, Ukrainian civilians in Liepāja also received beds and soft furnishings – bed linen, mattresses, pillows, blankets.
On the other hand, in cooperation with the association “City for people”, whose main goal is to promote the introduction of a good urban environment in Riga and other cities of Latvia, Ukrainian children and young people living in Liepāja received 17 completely new bicycles, which will facilitate not only daily movement, but also help to get to know the city and its inhabitants better . Every member of society could participate in the bicycle donation campaign, and the association implemented such a campaign for the second year in a row.

Since the beginning of the war, 1,536 Ukrainians have taken refuge in Liepāja, of which 80 Ukrainians currently live in municipal accommodation facilities, and 163 people live in households receiving state compensation for accommodation.
The municipality of Liepāja, together with state institutions and associations, has created a unified assistance system for providing support to citizens of Ukraine – in the section of the municipality’s website “www.liepaja.lv/atbalsts-ukrainai“, where the most important contacts are collected together, so that each person can contact the institution of interest according to their needs.
