A new bridge over Salaca could be built in place of the bridge affected by technical problems in Salacgrīva, and more progress in this matter is expected no later than mid-2024.
In response to the requests of MPs from the opposition forces of the Saeima – “Latvia first” and “The joint list”, Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens (P) explains that VSIA “Latvijas Valsts ceļi” has approved the bridge construction project developed by SIA “Projekts 3”.
The construction project has been proposed and planned to be realized by the municipality, and financing is currently being sought for the realization of this project. This year, the construction project has been accepted, explains the Ministry of Transport (SM).
“According to the solutions of the project, the existing bridge is planned to be completely demolished and a new one will be built in its place. During the construction of the bridge, the traffic will be organized next to the bridge on a temporary bridge,” Brišken said in the answer to the opposition MPs.
Following the proposal of the Memorandum of Understanding, the municipality of Limbažu region has prepared and submitted the project application “Reconstruction of the Bridge over Salaca to ensure dual use” for receiving the financial support of the European Infrastructure Interconnection Instrument (EISI) for Military Mobility.
The submitted projects are expected to be evaluated by January 2024 and, in case of a positive decision, the signing of the financing agreement is planned no later than July 2024.
It has already been announced that the Estonian Department of Transport has asked Latvian colleagues to provide more information about the technical condition of the Salaca bridge in Salacgrīvā on the “Via Baltica” route, taking into account that traffic jams are forming at the bridge.
The bridge over the Salacas river in Salacgrīva has not been renovated for years, and vehicles can currently cross it only in one direction at a time to avoid overloading the outdated structure.
The bridge has not been restored because the municipality of Limbažu district, which owns it, has not been able to find the necessary funds, while SM has refused to take ownership of the bridge, the head of the municipality of Limbažu district, Dagnis Straubergs, previously told the “Baltic News” portal.
