The State President Edgars Rinkēvičs will meet with the Prosecutor General Juri Stukānas on Tuesday, July 18, in the Riga Palace, the Office of the State President informed.
Reacting to the news about a Latvian citizen being fined EUR 15,500 for providing illegal intellectual and physical support to Russia, Rinkēvičs tweeted this week that “some recent decisions of the prosecutor’s office raise several questions”.
Commenting on this statement on Latvian Television’s program “Morning Panorama”, Rinkēvičs confirmed on Friday that he is not satisfied with the overly lenient sentences in cases of hate crimes, and in several cases exactly such sentences have been requested by the prosecutor’s office, which, in turn, explains its decisions vaguely.

The first person of the country added that he is not talking only about one specific case, but also about other cases related to expressions of hatred, violence.
“So, first of all, I find it unsatisfactory that the prosecutor’s office does not fully explain its decisions, and secondly, I also find these punishments unsatisfactory. I want to talk to the Prosecutor General and understand what the problem is,” said the President.
He pointed out that if the problem is in disorganized legal norms, then they can always be improved, besides, the Prosecutor General himself can approach the Saeima with legislative initiatives.
“At the moment, I want to hear clear answers to these questions. I am not very satisfied with the way the prosecutor’s office operates. This is the first time that I am quite critical. I will talk to the Prosecutor General, I want to understand what is going on. If I can help, I will help, but the prosecutor’s office must also get along,” the president summed up.
