The popular writer Monika Zīle has passed away, according to her daughter Baiba Zīle’s post on the social platform “Facebook”.

The popular writer Monika Zīle has passed away, according to her daughter Baiba Zīle’s post on the social platform “Facebook”.

“Mom! Nothing hurts anymore and now you are in the light. It’s definitely good there,” writes Zīle.

The popular journalist, politician, public worker Monika Zīle was born in Petuški, Rēzekne district – a village that now lives only in people’s memories. Monika Zīle was the chief editor of the newspaper “Soviet Youth” (1978 – 1987) and the magazine “Sieviete” (1987 – 1998). She was a member of the LR Saeima.

Along with working in the press, since 1980, Monika Zīle has focused on writing prose and plays. She is the author of several novels, collections of stories, and plays – a number of plays have been staged by amateur theaters in Latvia, including the Liepāja Theater. Zīle was the scriptwriter of the TV series “Flower of Darkness” (1998).

State President Edgars Rinkēvičs also expressed his condolences to Monika Zīle’s relatives and fans of the talent.

“The deepest condolences to the relatives and admirers of the journalist and writer Monika Zīle, as she passed away. Her opinion on the developments in the country and society was always interesting, sharp and apt,” Rinkēvičs writes on the microblogging site X (formerly “Twitter”).
