The State Border Guard calls on people to refrain from publishing unverified or unknown information about refugees who allegedly entered the country illegally on social media.

As the LETA agency was informed by the border guard, a video was circulated on social media on Tuesday afternoon showing a group of more than 20 people moving along the side of a country road. From the frames shown in the video, it is not possible to identify when the video was taken, nor to link it to any specific location. Likewise, the person who posted the video on the “Facebook.com” account cannot answer when and where this video was taken.

The State Border Guard denies that it has detained any large groups of people who illegally crossed the state border today or in the last few days, which are linked to a video spread on social media.

The State Border Guard points out that the hybrid threat on the Latvian-Belarus border is not only a challenge for the State Border Guard, it is a challenge for everyone – Latvia and society as a whole, therefore the State Border Guard calls on every citizen of Latvia to be alert, help and inform the border guards in cases when they are seen on the border, in the border strip persons or groups of persons that are not characteristic of the ethnic or national affiliation of the population of Latvia.

TVNET already reported that over the weekend the State Border Guard prevented 175 attempts to illegally cross the Latvia-Belarus border.

Over the past two months, around 100 migrants per day have often tried to enter Latvia illegally from Belarus, but have not been allowed in.

In total, this year, border guards have prevented 10,815 people from illegally crossing the state border, while 377 people have been admitted to Latvia for humanitarian reasons.
