Before the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius, Latvian Defense Minister Ināra Mūrniece (NA) admitted to journalists that the defense plans of the Baltic region are successful and detailed.
Mūrniece praised the work of NATO’s top commanders, moreover, these plans were developed even 18 months before the deadline.
“But countries must be able and NATO as a whole to fulfill these plans. Defense funding is needed for this,” the minister emphasized, reminding that, for example, Latvia plans to achieve defense funding of 3% of the gross domestic product in the coming years.
The new plans envisage NATO’s defense territory from the moment and minute of the first conflict, Mūrniece reminded.
It has already been reported that, in response to the threat posed by Russian aggression in Ukraine, new NATO defense plans have been developed for the Baltic States and Poland.
As the alliance’s position changes, the new plans envisage the defense of the region from the first day of a possible attack. The previous approach assumed that the Baltic states should try to hold back the Russian offensive until the allied forces could come to help.
The NATO summit in Vilnius will be held on July 11-12.
