On Thursday, April 27, Uldis Lasmanis, the regional historian of Selia, author of historical studies and publicist, died, Lasmanis’ relatives inform.

Lasmanis studied the history of Latvia, the destinies of various families and the events of the 20th century. He has written several publications and ten books. For his significant contribution to the research and documentation of Latvian history, Lasmanis received one of the highest state awards – he became a Knight of the Cross of Recognition.

The publicist was born in Sunākste, Selia county, he fled as a refugee during the Second World War. He was later convicted of trying to recover his family’s property and served his sentence in exile in the Uranium mines in Yakutia. After returning to his homeland, his active working years were spent in Riga Central Department Store as deputy director.

Lasmanis’ second career began in his retirement years, when he focused on his childhood dream and devoted himself to historical research. He has studied the Berg family for a long time, writing four books about it, and especially studied the fate of Arved Berg, restored the Berg family monument in the Pokrov cemetery in Riga. The local researcher actively collected information and wrote two books about his family – “The Son’s Century” and “The Father’s Century”.

He has also devoted himself to the study of the Holocaust and deportation and has published dozens of articles in publications such as “Illustrated History”, “Neatkarīgā Rīta Avīze”, “Latvijas Avīze” and others.

Farewell to Lasmanis is scheduled for May 3 at 15 in the Great Hall of Riga Crematorium.
