You can open the Windows File Recovery Tool from the Start menu, PowerShell or Windows Terminal (as administrator) . You can see your options by entering the ” winfr ” command.

With the program, you can retrieve a specific file, a folder, different files depending on the file type or the names using wildcards . The syntax is clear:

winfr sourcefolder: targetfolder: [/ keys]

To recover a specific file from the C: drive and restore it to the external USB drive (E :), enter the command:

winfr C: E: / n \ Users \ UserName \ Documents \ ImportantFiles \ filename.pdf

To restore the folder completely, enter the command:

winfr C: E: / n \ Users \ UserName \ Documents \ ImportantFiles \

Windows File Recovery offers three modes you can use to recover your files: Default, Segment, and Signature (Top Level) . To recover a recently deleted file on the NTFS file system, you can use the default mode as shown above. If you need to recover a file that was deleted some time ago from the NTFS file system or restore a file after formatting the disk, try segment mode first using the / r switch .

winfr C: E: / r / n \ Users \ UserName \ Documents \ ImportantFiles \

If this doesn’t restore your file , or if you need to restore a file from a non-NTFS file system such as FAT, exFAT, or ReFS , you must use signature mode. For example; You can restore the JPEG and PNG photos from your F: drive to the recovery folder on the E: drive. Recovery from SD card etc. enter this command:

winfr F: E: / x / y: JPEG, PNG

There are many more options available to you, and you can find them in the Microsoft Support article.
