Hostage standoff at Hamburg airport is over, suspect arrested – police

FRANKFURT (RockedBuzz by way of Reuters) – Police arrested a person and rescued a toddler at the middle of a hostage standoff at Hamburg airport on Sunday, ending a disaster that had pressured authorities to shut the busy air hub.

A person, who police stated was suspected of carrying a gun and presumably explosives, drove a car by the airport gates Saturday evening, officers stated.

Police stated the 35-12 months-outdated man was along with his 4-12 months-outdated daughter and was believed to be concerned in a custody dispute.

“The hostage situation is over,” the town’s police pressure wrote on X, previously often known as Twitter, early Sunday afternoon.

“The suspect acquired out of the automobile along with his daughter. The man was arrested by emergency providers with out resistance. The baby seems to be unhurt,” he added.

The airport stated it is working to renew operations as shortly as doable. A complete of 286 flights with round 34,500 passengers have been scheduled for Sunday.

“I want the mom, the little lady and her household a variety of power to face this horrible expertise,” Hamburg mayor Peter Tschentscher wrote in X.

The episode raised safety issues at the airport lower than 4 months after local weather activists took to the tarmac and blocked planes.
