VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed defender Paulo Otavio will leave the club after four years at the end of the season.

Both sides have failed to agree on an extension to the player’s contract, which expires in the summer, the club said on Thursday.

“We had a very open and honest discussion with Paulo and in the conversations we had with him, unfortunately we could not reach an agreement,” said managing director Marcel Schäfer.

The Brazilian is currently sidelined with an ankle injury.

“Despite the serious injuries I had, my time at Wolfsburg was very good and it wasn’t easy to make this decision. I have chosen to take a new path in my career, though,” he said.
