Deliberate targeting of national values with the aim of dividing the society – this is the still unknown motive of vandalism described by the residents of Balvu district. For the second time there, the inscription on the road sign in the Latvian language has been painted over. The repeated case has raised concerns, whether there are really among the locals those who openly show their distaste for Latgalian values, reports LTV “Dienas zina”.
The municipality hopes to clarify the situation with the involvement of the State Security Service.
As the situation repeats itself, part of the inhabitants of Balvu district no longer consider it as vandalism, but as deliberate incitement of hatred and division of society. By reacting quickly, the sign has already been cleared.
Sergejs Maksimovs, Chairman of Balvu County Council, tells LTV’s “Dienas začiņi” that this is an attack on the national values of Latvians. He suspects that this is done by people who are hostile towards the Latvian state and its statehood.
Aldis Bukšs, a member of the council of Balvu district, also sees in what happened a provocative action, which is most likely carried out by forces unfriendly to Latvia, because the only beneficiaries of it are the pro-Kremlin forces whose aim is to divide Latvian society.
After the unpleasant accident, Aldis Bukšs will file a complaint with the State Security Service, which has yet to provide further comments. Also the first time after the inscription was caught, the municipality appealed to several security institutions, but the State Police refused to initiate a criminal case due to lack of evidence. The event has caused a clash of different opinions both on the Internet and in society.
