The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy monsoon rains that will begin today and are expected to last for several days – a forecast that has raised concerns about possible flooding in regions that they are still reeling from last year’s catastrophic floods.
Last year, a large part of the South Asian country was flooded due to intense monsoon rains and melting glaciers, which basically phenomenon related to climate change. This event caused significant damage to agriculture and infrastructure, and
claimed at least 1,700 lives.
The weather service has forecast heavy thunderstorms and rain in Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar from Monday evening. The weather conditions are expected to extend to other regions by next Saturday.
Authorities have warned that low-lying areas such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala and Lahore may experience flooding. In addition, there is a risk of flash floods in the western hilly regions during the week.
