According to Reuters, Yi’s words could be a reaction to the recent meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the president of the United States. Joe Biden then warned China of the serious consequences he would suffer if he decided to provide Russia with any material aid.
As the agency notes, China has so far not officially condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while stressing that it fully recognizes Ukraine’s sovereignty. The country’s authorities blame NATO for the war. Previous press releases also claimed that Russia would have “legitimate security concerns”. China also does not accept the sanctions imposed on Russia. Experts believe that this stance of China is related to Moscow’s growing dependence on Beijing.
