An explosion rocked the center of Kyiv

According to the Kyiv military administration, the explosion occurred at 17:20 Ukrainian time (16:20 Hungarian time) in the center of the capital.

According to preliminary information, the explosive device could have been set off by a man taken in for questioning in the bathroom of the court.

There were no reports of injuries, and so far Russia has not been held responsible for the incident.

UPDATE at 19:45!!! Announcement by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klimenko according to the bomber lost his life.

An extraordinary event took place at the Shevchenkivsky District Court in Kyiv. The police received a report of an explosion

he announced Ihor Klimenko Ukrainian Interior Minister, adding that the details are still being clarified.

According to the Ukrainian news portal Starana it may have been the escape attempt of a suspect brought to court for a terrorist act in 2015. The news portal knows that Ihor Humenjuk a man named grabbed the gun of one of the guards and took two security guards hostage, with whom he locked himself in a toilet of the building, and then detonated an explosive device. It is not yet known how the man got hold of the explosives.

According to Sztarana, Ihor Humenyuk is a member of a Ukrainian nationalist organization that threw grenades at members of the National Guard during the riots at the Ukrainian parliament building in August 2015.
