Gazprom and its Moldovan subsidiary announced at the end of 2021: Moldova has accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars in debt, which it must repay in order to continue supplying the country with Russian gas without interruption. Gazprom put the accumulated debt at 709 million dollars a year ago, excluding interest accrued since then.
Sandu denied this, but at the same time, he did not disclose whether Moldova has any smaller debts towards the Russian gas company. He added that the Moldovan government will announce the results of the audit in an official statement within days.
Since last December, Moldova has not bought gas from Gazprom, but has covered its needs with natural gas purchased from other European countries.
