Russia has shown that it is not a reliable partner, US State Department press secretary Matthew Miller said on Monday (September 25), following Armenia’s accusations against Russia that it did not intervene when Azerbaijan’s army attacked Nagorno-Karabakh again.

“I believe that Russia has shown that it is not a reliable security partner,” Miller told reporters.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Sunday criticized Russia, which had sent peacekeepers to the region after the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, but did not intervene last week when the Azerbaijani army attacked Nagorno-Karabakh again.

Russia called Pashinyan’s remarks unacceptable and accused Armenia of trying to sever ties.

The US said it supports Armenia’s calls to the UN for an international mission to assess Azerbaijan’s treatment of ethnic Armenians.

“We believe there should be an international mission that provides transparency, guarantees and assurance to the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and the international community that their rights and security will be protected in accordance with the public statements made by Azerbaijan,” Miller said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hailed Baku’s “historic success” during a meeting with Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev today in Azerbaijan’s Nakhichevan exclave.

Asked about Erdogan’s visit, Miller said: “We continue to hope that all of our allies and partners can play a constructive role in efforts to achieve a lasting settlement, and that certainly includes Turkey.”

Last week, after the extended military operation by Azerbaijan, the authorities of the Armenian Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, which existed “de facto” for more than 30 years, effectively capitulated to Baku.

Currently, negotiations are underway on the reintegration of the Nagorno-Karabakh Armenian community in Azerbaijan.

It is expected that the entire territory of the disputed region will come under the control of the Azerbaijani authorities.

Pashinyan announced his readiness to accept refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to the situation, more than 6,500 people arrived in Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh on Monday evening.
