Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reached an agreement with opposition leader Benny Gantz on Wednesday to form an “emergency” government and war cabinet, the two politicians said in a joint statement.

Netanyahu, Gantz and Defense Minister Yoav Galants will work in the War Cabinet.

Former army chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot, who also represents Gantz’s party, and current strategic affairs minister Ron Dermer, who represents Netanyahu’s Likud party, will act as observers.

The other opposition leader, Yairs Lapid, has not joined his former colleague Gantz, but the statement says that a place in the war cabinet has also been reserved for him.

The previous coalition partners of “Likud” – extreme right-wing and orthodox Jewish parties – will also retain their representation in the government.

Netanyahu has agreed to freeze controversial judicial reforms that have sparked the largest protests in Israel’s history.

During the war, no non-war bills will be advanced, the statement said.
