More than 40,000 people have pledged to donate to the policeman on the Gofundme.com website. A fundraising campaign in support of the policeman was started by far-right commentator Jean Messia. Meanwhile, only 200,000 euros have been donated to the family of the murdered teenager.
The teenager’s death and the ensuing violent riots, looting and vandalism have highlighted deep political divisions in France. Many right-wing public figures have expressed support for the police force, but the left sees the teenager’s death as the result of systematic racism in the French police.
Left-wing politicians and representatives of the ruling centrist party criticized Messia and “Gofundme.com”, considering such a campaign scandalous and shameful.
