On Wednesday, the Estonian Rīga Kogu adopted a statement expressing support for Ukraine’s efforts to join NATO as the only way to ensure a rules-based world order, long-term peace and the security of European democracies.
92 deputies voted for the announcement. There are a total of 101 members in the parliament.
In the document, Rīgikogu emphasizes that the sovereignty and territorial indivisibility of European countries must be strengthened and long-lasting peace must be achieved, and also expresses the belief that the policy of spheres of interest in Europe continues to threaten security.
The Parliament states that it takes into account the declaration of the North Atlantic Alliance’s 2008 Bucharest summit that Ukraine will become a member of NATO, and the application submitted by the Ukrainian government for membership in the alliance last year.
In the statement, Rīgakogu emphasizes the need to decisively strengthen the security architecture, which has served the security of the free and democratic Euro-Atlantic countries well, and expresses support for the Ukrainian people who are fighting for freedom.
The Parliament also recognizes that Ukraine’s victory over Russia, which is waging a war of aggression, and Ukraine’s subsequent admission to NATO is the only chance to ensure a rules-based international order, lasting peace and security for European democracies.
Rīgikogu points out that at the alliance summit in Vilnius in July, it is vitally important to formulate concrete and clear steps that are necessary to integrate Ukraine into NATO. Ukraine should also be invited to join the alliance, the parliament emphasizes.
Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine last February, the Estonian parliament has passed several statements in support of Ukraine.
