Russia must end its war against Ukraine, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk demanded on Friday.
“The Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine has thrown us back into an archaic era. In an era when the territory of a neighboring country can be invaded and seized arbitrarily as one’s own. When the identity and history of communities can be denied and reality rewritten,” Turk said at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
“At a time when humanity faces enormous existential challenges, this devastating war pulls us away from the work of creating solutions,” the commissioner said.
“This war defies reason. This madness must end and peace must be found in accordance with UN and international law.”
The commissioner also pointed to the report of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, which documents the deaths, crimes and destruction of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
