In Romania, on Wednesday, near the border with Ukraine, debris, which is thought to have come from an unmanned aerial vehicle, was found, the Romanian Ministry of Defense announced.
This is the third such find in Romania in the last week.
Two helicopters of the Romanian Air Force with specialist teams were sent to the east of Tulcea County, where fragments that could be from a drone are scattered over an area of several tens of meters, the ministry announced.
The ministry also stated that it has informed the General Inspectorate of Emergencies about areas along the border where there is a risk of incidents due to Russian forces attacking Ukraine’s Danube ports.
The ministry revealed that authorities have received phone calls about possible drone wreckage between three populated areas. Experts will collect and test the samples, after which an investigation will be conducted, the ministry said.
Although it is not clear whether Romania has determined where and when the drones were launched, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said on Saturday about the findings of the drone fragments that there was a similarity to drones used by the Russian military.
Iohannis said this indicates that there has been an “absolutely unacceptable violation of the sovereign airspace of Romania, a NATO ally, which poses a real threat to the security of Romanian citizens in the area”.
Asked about the drone fragments found earlier, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Cholaku said today that “no one attacked us and no one is attacking us.”
“Some debris bounced off the drone that was hit by the Ukrainian army. There were no explosives in it, there was nothing in it that could harm the population,” Cholaku said.
Last week, Romania’s National Emergencies Committee approved measures that allow authorities to send out local alerts via text messages or sound alarms to warn residents in areas bordering conflict zones in Ukraine of incidents or potential incidents.
