The Palestinian terrorist group “Hamas” uses the residents of the Gaza Strip as human shields, German Foreign Minister Annaleen Burbock announced on Friday.

“Hamas is now barricading itself behind even more innocent people and using them as a shield in Gaza,” Burbok told a news conference in Israel, adding that Hamas has taken all Gazans hostage. “Their tunnels, weapon depots and command centers are deliberately located in residential buildings, supermarkets and universities. Maybe even in hospitals,” the minister said.

Hamas militants stormed into Israel from the Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing more than 1,300 people and injuring more than 3,200 others, and taking about 120 hostages.

In response to the attack, Israel is carrying out air and artillery strikes against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, and has blocked food, fuel and medicine supplies to the territory, which is controlled by Hamas. The number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip has risen to 1,799.

Concerns for residents of the Gaza Strip have grown following Israel’s order to evacuate the northern part of the territory. We are talking about 1.1 million people. This could be a sign of an upcoming Israeli army ground operation in the Gaza Strip, although it has not yet been announced.

Burbok said that democratic countries, including Germany and Israel, take the protection of civilians seriously. “Civilians need safe places where they can find protection and receive basic necessities,” the minister said. She discussed the issue with an Israeli colleague.

Also, Germany negotiated with the UN and Egypt, which also shares a border with the Gaza Strip, on the protection of civilians. Burbok also called for the release of the hostages taken during the Hamas attack, among whom are German citizens.
