The popular chatbot “ChatGPT” will be available again in Italy, as its developer – the US company “OpenAI” – has fixed flaws that raised concerns about insufficient protection of private data.
“OpenAI” has resumed operations in Italy, ensuring greater transparency and protection of European users’ rights, the Italian data protection authority “Garante” has announced.
“Garante” has indicated that “OpenAI” has fulfilled a series of requirements set for the company in order to cancel the ban on the operation of “ChatGPT” imposed at the end of March.
In particular, “OpenAI” has ensured greater transparency of user data processing, guaranteed users to request certain exception rights and introduced a protective barrier for children who have not reached the age of 13.
When it was launched last year, ChatGPT became a global sensation with its ability to generate opinion pieces, songs, exam materials and even news articles based on small cues.
However, critics have long raised concerns that it is not clear where ChatGPT and its competitors obtain data and how they process it.
Universities and several educational institutions have banned this chatbot due to concerns that students can use it to create academic papers and cheat in exams.
In March, when “Garante” made the decision to block “ChatGPT”, it was pointed out that the chatbot has neither a legal basis for data extraction nor clarity about whose data is being obtained.
The wrong answers given by Sarunbot allow us to understand that the data is not being used in a proper way, and children are being given “absolutely inappropriate answers”, the administration said.
